About This Game

The game that defined the survival-horror genre is back! Check out the remastered HD version of Resident Evil.

In 1998 a special forces team is sent to investigate some bizarre murders on the outskirts of Raccoon City. Upon arriving they are attacked by a pack of blood-thirsty dogs and are forced to take cover in a nearby mansion. But the scent of death hangs heavy in the air. Supplies are scarce as they struggle to stay alive.

Graphics

More detailed graphics that retain the horror.
The environments come alive with detail thanks to resolution upgrades and non-static 3D models.
Post-processing effects like Bloom filters, which were not easy to do at the time of the original release, have been added to make the HD graphics even more realistic.
High-Resolution Environments - We've increased the resolution of the background environments by recreating them with a mix of high-res static images, plus animated 3D models.

Widescreen Support

Widescreen (16:9) is supported, so players can experience a greater sense of immersion.
In widescreen mode, the screen will scroll. The parts of the screen that get cut off on the top and bottom will scroll into view automatically depending on the character's position.
You can switch the display mode during gameplay in real time.

Sound & New Controls

High-Quality Sound - The audio has been remastered to increase the sampling rate, and of course 5.1ch output is also now supported.
New Controls

Marriage Should Not Displace Friendship

That Genesis describes marriage as being a major solution to human solitude does not exclude friendships from performing the same function.  A person can live without marital relationship and still be relationally fulfilled thanks to nonromantic social bonds--including those present in platonic opposite gender friendships.  Nevertheless, it is easy to find people who are delusional enough to genuinely think that relational closeness with one member of the opposite gender limits or prevents closeness with another.

Nothing about sharing emotional and even physical intimacy with friends of the opposite gender detracts from or excludes having a marital relationship.  It is not as if individual men and women have only a limited amount of affection to bestow upon people of the opposite gender, nor is it true that a married person who enjoys deep emotional closeness with friends of the opposite gender has betrayed their spouse.  Neither type of relationship threatens the existence of the other; both are fully capable of flourishing simultaneously.

In the context of cultures that discourage non-romantic intimacy between men and women outside of family relationships, extramarital opposite gender friendships do not communicate marital weakness, but marital security.  It often takes intelligence, strength, and perhaps even courage to disregard cultural norms and endure the pathetic concerns of ignorant observers.  Consequently, that a married person has close opposite gender friends might signify a strong marriage.  Marriage does not and should not displace friendship.

Finding quality friendships is often difficult enough without the sexism of one spouse demanding that the other deprive himself or herself of cross-gender friendships, a decision that significantly restricts their pool of potential friends.  Anyone who is not satisfied with their romantic relationship unless their significant other does not have friendships with the other gender is not worthy of having a romantic relationship to begin with.  It is always amusing to see which arbitrary, controlling, petty measures some people will go to in order to feel artificially secure.

Instead of embracing basic rationality, many people, especially Christians, are egoistic enough to sincerely believe that their significant others owe them the totality of their emotional intimacy with the opposite gender (several family relationships being the usual exceptions).  Imagine if parents thought their children should not develop intimate relationships with people outside of their families!  Would the same people who oppose friendship with the other gender while in a romantic relationship approve of such idiocy?  The hypocrisy and arbitrariness of the average person's worldview are immense.  Stupidity is a common ailment, and there is no aspect of Western society that is safe from its ravages.

Introducing A New Google Play App And Game Icon Specification

Posted by Steve Suppe, Product Manager, Google Play
As part of our focus and dedication to improving the Google Play Store experience for our users, we are introducing new design specifications for your app icons.

Left to right: original icon, new icon (example), original icon in legacy mode

As of early April, you will be able to upload new icons to the Google Play Console and confirm you are compliant with the new specification. Original icons are still accepted in the Google Play Store during this time. As of May 1st, developers will no longer be able to upload icons in the Play Console which do not meet the new specifications, although existing original icons in the Google Play Store during this period can remain unchanged.
By June 24, we require you to:
  1. Update your icon to the new specification.
  2. Upload your icon to Play Console.
  3. Confirm in Play Console that your icon meets the new specification.
We highly recommend that you update your icons and confirm they meet the new specification as soon as possible to ensure that you provide the highest quality experience for users.

What exactly is changing?

  • Icon assets will remain the same size (512 x 512), but transparent backgrounds will no longer be allowed.
  • Google Play on Android and Chrome OS will dynamically apply rounded corners and drop shadows to icons. The corner radius will be 20% of the icon size, to ensure consistency at different sizes.
  • There will be no changes to Google Play on other form factors (TV, Wear, Auto).
  • Note this does not affect your APK launcher icons for Android.
Timelines Changes
Early April You can start uploading your new icons in Play Console and confirm they meet the new specification.
  • Original icons will continue to display correctly in Google Play.
  • New icons will display correctly in Google Play.
May 1st Any new icons uploaded in Play Console must be confirmed as meeting the new specification.
  • Original icons will continue to display correctly in Google Play.
  • New icons will display correctly in Google Play.
June 24th Original icons are converted to "legacy mode." You must confirm that any new icons uploaded in Play Console meet the new specification.
  • Original icons will be automatically converted to "legacy mode" icons.
  • New icons render correctly in the Google Play Store.

These updates will help us all provide a more unified and consistent look and feel for Google Play, allowing us to better showcase your apps and games and provide a higher quality user experience.
We will be keeping you up-to-date with these changes in the coming months - so look out for more updates. In the meantime, check out our new icon design specifications.

AP 2006, Infiltrate!

In this episode I will be looking at (and also talking about) the Apollo game Infiltrate, which is kind of like a dumbed down Elevator Action for our Atari 2600. I don't have an exact date for the next game yet, but it will be tron Deadly Discs by M Network and will come out in January. If you have any Christmas memories that you would like to submit to the 6th annual Christmas show, please send them to me by the end of the day on December 16th. Also, I will be announcing a date and time for when Sarah and I will do a livestream of all the games I covered this year. If you are feeling charitable, please consider donating to my or my friends' Extra Life campaign. You can donate until the end of the year, every little bit will help kids who are sick. Website Updates, Part 3

While updating my website build process over the past week (part 1, part 2), I decided I should also revisit my page layouts. Last year, I started learning about responsive design, studied the theory, and implemented it on my site. I converted 514 out of around 600 pages, and said "The rest are either unimportant or impractical to convert." Of the ones I didn't convert, some were in a 450px width and most in a 600px width. I wanted to see if I could convert the 450px pages to 600px at least.

Although I had abandoned Python lxml for building my website, it turned out to be useful for analyzing my website. I had 12 pages using width=450, 80 pages with width=600, and 183 pages with width=flex. (This is not counting 439 blog posts that use width=flex but in a "compatibility" mode.) I went through the 450px pages, intending to convert them to 600px if reasonable, and … it turned out all of them could be converted to a responsive layout relatively easily. Hooray! That means I no longer need to support the 450px layout. I removed it from my CSS and XHTML build script.

I was feeling optimistic, so I decided to visit some of those 600px pages to see if I could convert them. One after another, I was able to convert them without too much effort. I was feeling pretty good! There were some pages that had complex layouts that I wasn't able to convert easily, so I left them in 600px format.

The next step was a little more tricky. I wanted to unify two of my CSS styles. Let me explain visually. For the first 23 years of my web site, I used a container with a fixed width (450px or 600px) to enclose the content (paragraphs, diagrams, etc.):

section { width: 600px; }

For the flexible layout I designed last year, in large part because of articles on distill.pub, I changed to a system where the container would be full width, and each individual paragraph/diagram/etc. would have a width:

section > * { width: 600px; }

This allows me to make some diagrams wider:

I wanted to convert all of my pages to have this flexibility. I was feeling overly confident and optimistic so I decided to just do it. It turns out this broke a lot of my pages. The reason? The CSS rule

section { width: 600px; }

only applies to block elements. Over the years, I had been careless, putting inline elements on the page without putting them inside a block. The main offenders: img, canvas, svg, but I also had places where I had text without a container.

This is where Python's lxml came in handy. I read every page in, parsed it, and found all children of the container. Then I printed out all the places where I had inline elements:

children = bxml.xpath('//section/*') for child in children: if child.tag not in ('figure', 'p', 'div', 'ul', 'ol', 'dl', 'pre', 'blockquote', 'address', 'hr', 'h2', 'h3', 'h4', 'table', 'style', 'script', 'noscript', 'footer'): print(bxml_filename, ' ', str(child)[:40])

Very handy! Once I had the list, I was able to go through each of these pages and fix the layout on each of the 80 pages. That took a while but it simplified the CSS I have to support going forwards, and it also gives me more flexibility in the layout.

Since I was going through all these pages anyway, I looked to see how much work they would be to convert to the responsive layout. Surprisingly, a lot of them were easy to convert! So I converted 73 of the 80 pages.

Now I had only 7 pages left that were using the fixed width layout. And I was feeling optimistic and productive. So I decided to try converting them.

The last few pages took a lot longer. They had tricky layouts, often involving overlapping elements, absolute positioning, iframes, etc. But I felt like I was so close to being able to drop the legacy layout that I spent the time to convert these pages. So I did!

I've converted the entire site to be responsive. Hooray!

Now I can remove all the old CSS rules, and only have a single set of CSS rules for all the pages.

Well, kind of. Some of my templates still insert an extra <div> under <section> as a "compatibility mode". These pages work with the new CSS, and have variable width, but they don't allow for the flexible layouts. That's ok. There's always more to do! I'm happy with how much I got done this week.

Update [2019-03-08] I had nearly 500 pages using the "compatibility mode", mostly blog posts, but also output from emacs org mode. Over the past week I went through them and converted them to not require it. I think I am finished with this major update!

The Train Travels From Afar

Trains have fascinated me ever since I was a child. Growing up in the American Midwest, I often counted freight cars while we waited at crossings in our small town. My parents gave me a starter model railroad set for a Christmas present when I was 6, and my father and I worked on it together well into my teenage years. When I moved to Germany after University, I was able to renew my love for trains with my own sons, whether riding the high speed rail across the country, or visiting Berlin's Transportation Museum or Hamburg's Miniature Wonderland model railroad.  I even bought them wooden train sets while they were still babies, in anticipation of the time they would be old enough to build elaborate tracks covering our living room floor.

It is not surprising, then, that I have worked on many different game designs with this theme. The core idea for "The Train Travels From Afar" originated from the fun of watching model trains, and guessing where they would go next by following the tracks ahead of them. And the twisting tracks that form the completed board at the end of the game also resemble our apartment floor after building wooden train tracks with my sons all afternoon.

The game was developed while my family spent one year in the United States. We enjoy living in Berlin, and my sons were born here, but we do miss our families who still live in America. This was a rare opportunity for all of us to spend Christmas together.

For my two nieces, I would often send them German board games as Christmas presents, and sometimes I designed games especially for them.  This time I decided I wanted to develop my train game for them.

After 6 months of development, I finished the prototype. My nieces opened the gift on Christmas Day, and we played the game constantly for the rest of the holidays. They even offered some tips on how to make the game better.

Naturally, I added the game to my portfolio of game designs which I offer to publishers, including Polish book publisher Nasza Księgarnia.  It is exciting for me to have a new publishing partnership with NK, and, of course, to see the game professionally produced. I can't wait to give the new game to my nieces.

In the game, players compete to be the first one to get their trains to the most valuable stations, while also scoring for long, looping routes. Each player has her own "frame" game board and a set of tiles with tracks. In every round, you draw one tile, place it in your play area and move all trains that are connected to the new track. Be careful not to crash them! You score 1 point for every tile crossed by each train, and looping through tiles multiple times can help your score. Additionally, the farthest stations are the most valuable--until the first trains arrive. Each delivery decreases the value of a station, so you may have to change your plans in the middle of your journey if an opponent reaches you initial destination first!

Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3GB DDR5 HDMI / DVI-I / Dual Mini DP with Boost PCI-Express Graphics Card 11196-16-20G Price: $302.00

The "Boost" version of the Radeon HD 7950 3GB graphics card. Essentially it is a manufactured overclocked card so you do not have to do it yourself to risk messing anything up or voiding any warranty. I had initially stuck a PowerColor Radeon HD 7950 here, but prices have finally dropped again for the Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 Boost card, so here you go!
You will be able to play most if not all games at max settings at 1920×1080 resolutions and will even play well if you have a super high resolution monitor at 2560×1600.
